Technology Overview
About ATAK & Meshtastic
Two powerful technologies — one for real-time situational awareness, one for off-grid mesh communication. Together they form the backbone of GEL LLC's tactical device rental program.
What Is ATAK?
ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit) is a geospatial mapping and situational awareness application originally developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory for military use. It runs on ruggedized Android devices and provides real-time GPS tracking, team coordination, and mission planning capabilities in a single interface.
Originally classified and used exclusively by U.S. military and government agencies, ATAK was later released to the public as a free application through the TAK Product Center. Today it is used by law enforcement, emergency responders, search and rescue teams, outdoor adventurers, and hobbyists worldwide.
Key ATAK Capabilities
Who Uses ATAK?
Military & Government
The original use case — coordinating units in the field with shared operational pictures and encrypted comms.
Law Enforcement
Tracking officers during operations, coordinating with dispatch, and managing perimeters in real time.
Search & Rescue
Mapping search grids, tracking team positions, and coordinating with incident command during rescue operations.
Outdoor Adventurers
Hikers, hunters, and off-road groups use ATAK to stay connected and track each other in remote terrain.
What Is Meshtastic?
Meshtastic is an open-source project that turns inexpensive LoRa (Long Range) radio modules into a decentralized mesh communication network. Devices relay messages hop-by-hop across the network, enabling text messaging and GPS position sharing without any cellular service, Wi-Fi, or internet connection.
Each Meshtastic device acts as both a node and a relay. When you send a message, it broadcasts to nearby nodes, which rebroadcast it further — extending range far beyond what a single radio could achieve. Networks can span miles of terrain with no infrastructure required.
Key Meshtastic Capabilities
Who Uses Meshtastic?
Emergency Preparedness
When cellular networks fail during disasters, Meshtastic keeps communities connected with no infrastructure dependency.
Remote Expeditions
Mountaineers, backcountry hikers, and off-road groups maintain contact across terrain where radios and phones fail.
Tactical Operations
Combined with ATAK, Meshtastic provides a fully off-grid communications and tracking backbone for field teams.
Amateur Radio & Hobbyists
The ham radio and maker communities use Meshtastic to experiment with long-range mesh networking and IoT applications.
ATAK + Meshtastic: Better Together
When paired, ATAK and Meshtastic create a fully self-contained tactical communications system. Meshtastic handles the radio layer — relaying GPS positions and messages across the mesh — while ATAK visualizes everything on a shared operational map. The result is a team coordination platform that works anywhere on Earth, with zero dependence on commercial infrastructure.
